2014 Joint Conference of Confucius Institutes

2014 Joint Conference of Confucius Institutes in parts of Asia held in Jakarta, Indonesia from 26th May to 28th May. The conference sponsored by Hanban (Confucius Institutes Headquarters) and hosted by Confucius Institute at University of Al Azhar aims to sum up the past successful experience, and research strategy for future development of Confucius Institutes in Asia. Deputy speaker of Parliament of Indonesia, representatives of the Ministry of Higher Education, Director-General of Hanban, Chinese Embassy agent and the President of University of Al Azhar attended the meeting. Besides, delegates of 78 Confucius Institutes and classrooms, Embassies and consulates from 23 Asian countries attended the meeting. Mr. Ma Jun, Chinese Director of Confucius Institute at University of Dubai also attended the meeting.

Xu Lin, Director-General of Hanban, delivered a speech at the conference opening ceremony on the morning of 26th May. She pointed that in the past 10 years Confucius Institutes in Asia have flourished in support of both Chinese and foreign parties and been warmly welcomed by local governments and people as an important platform for local people to learn Chinese and understand Chinese culture. She mentioned the development of Asian Confucius Institutes presented three major features: the first, students increased steadily and teaching quality improved gradually; the second, teaching condition improved gradually and local teachers training was strengthened; the third, cultural communication activities were colorful and unique. She also put forward three proposals that all the Confucius Institutes should fully prepare to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Confucius Institutes, put CCS Program implementation on the agenda and positively research cooperation model with local social organization and Chinese funded institutions.

During the 3-day meeting, Wang Yongli, Deputy Director of Hanban, mainly introduced some major projects such as Chinese language teachers training, HSK tests, development of Confucius Institute classrooms in primary and middle schools and complication guidance of international Chinese teaching text books. During the group discussion, Director Ma Jun of Confucius Institute at University of Dubai and other delegates extensively and deeply communicated and discussed six topics on Global Day activity plan, cooperation model between Confucius Institutes and Chinese funded institutions, scale expansion of HSK tests, development situation of Chinese teaching, training of Chinese teachers and implementation of CCS Program.

In the meeting, Mr Ma Jun submitted Case Analysis of Teaching and Examination Integrate of Confucius Institute at University of Dubai to exchange experience.
