During the period of 2014 Spring Festival, Confucius Institute at Dubai University held a Chinese calligraphy experiencing class. Director Ma Jun of Confucius Institute at Dubai University taught a spectacular calligraphy class to the CI students and the Lecturer Yang Xiaoli assisted.
Before class, Lecturer Yang introduced Chinese culture related to Chinese Spring Festival and Spring Festival Couplets. Then Director Ma displayed a piece of Li Calligraphy in his own handwriting which attracted the students’ interest. During class, Director Ma wrote a Chinese character “马”in Li, kai, Xing and Cao Calligraphy styles, which gave the students an intuitive understanding of different character fonts. He also displayed the tools of calligraphy and taught students how to hold the writing brush. Through his explanation, the students quickly mastered the way to hold writing brush.
After instruction to Chinese calligraphy, Director Ma wrote 7 characters “我在迪拜过春节”(I celebrate Spring Festival In Dubai) as examples to teach students how to write Li Calligraphy in Chinese Writing brush. The students learned carefully and wrote very patiently. After Director Ma patiently teaching of the basic strokes “Dian, Heng, Shu, Gou, Ti, Pie, and Na”, the students finally finished their Li Calligraphy.
Students were so attracted by Chinese Calligraphy even when class was over that they still felt attached to it. All of them said, “It is very interesting to learn Chinese calligraphy.” They also couldn’t wait to take photos of their calligraphy works.
